During the combat, you can kill them (this lets you finish the quest) though that has repercussions, such as making other characters hate you for killing their friend and giving you reputation for being dangerous (which can be a good thing or a bad thing.) There are story objectives, but mostly you choose one quest from a pool. Not only do you get to build your deck, and choose the theme and strategy of the deck, and choose which upgrade to take for your cards, you also have lots of choices in terms of what to do. In the basegame, playing more also unlocks more cards that are addded to the pool. On the Expiremental branch, there's the Perk system that lets you complete Grifts to get points to unlock perks and perk slots.
